Waterfall trip :-)

Went to the waterfall with the family and the client today.  Was a hell of a hike, some very steep long hills, but a fun place to swim and chill out once we got there. :-)
The required "Selfie". Lol

Pretty. :-)

Posing maybe a little...

Distance shot of the swimming hole and waterfall.
There were more picture but they didn't want to upload properly.  Maybe I'll get them up here later. :-)

The tropics are trying to kill me

Kidney infection.
Abscess that needed to be lanced (and now is taking its own sweet time healing... enough that I may have to go back in...)
Swollen feet and ankles that won't go away and make walking painful.

And now several of my bug bites have a spreading mottled redness around them.

I'm going to have such stories when I get home!  Assuming I don't die here... ;-)

My room

View from the door

View from my bed towards the door

Other view from my bed. :-)

Pictures taken in the 2.7 seconds between when I cleaned it and put away my stuff and when I'm sure it was dirty again.  The back "window" is only a wire mesh, and so a lot of dust etc blows in all the time.  But really, it is comfortable enough.  If I lived here, instead of at home, I could see living in a space this size, if only there were the addition of a sink, possibly where the table is now, and a chair/desk of some sort.  :-)

More of the animals

Campanita, or "Tinkerbell".  She's my favorite. :-)

Tried to get a better picture of Guinevere (the one in the foreground) but she just kept following me...

Aldiano, one of the ponies, and my other favorite. :-)

Lluvia, the one I get along with the least well, and the other pony.

My goat friends!  Luna (on the left) and Fenway.

Tolouse, looking fierce, as usual.

Tarantino.  Something of a badass, and brother to Guinevere.

Zorba, on the left, and Altivo.

Zorba again.  :-)

I'll try to get pictures of Congo, the 30 something year old male, and Augustus, the stallion, soon.  :-)

First pictures of farm #2

All four cats.  Naraja (in the foreground), Nutsy on the far left, then Mittmitt, then Cimoney.

Nutsy (so cute!)

Cashew

Cat in a basket!

Why, hello...

The kitchen

Kirk (yes, like Captain Kirk)

Morning rituals being observed...

Naranja could be Steve's long lost brother...

The living room

The view while showering.  yes, Tolouse is real.  I'll get some better pictures of him soon.

Establo san Rafael

As for some reason early rising has not been coming as easily to me the last few days, and it has scarcely turned 6am, this is perhaps not the best of times to be trying to write a coherent blog post, but, you know, I have the time, and not much else to do while I drink my tea, so, why not?
At this point in time, the most I can give is first impressions of the new place (Establo San Rafael) as I’ve only been here one full day, and a goodly portion of that was spent in town seeing the doctor, and the most of the rest of the day half comatose on my bed watching a couple of movies.  I’m sure I’ll have a lot more to write about in days come, as I see more of the farm, meet the animals more intimately, get to learning my chores, etc.

Lets see.  There are far more animals here, of farm more sorts, than at VerdEnergia.  I’m sure I’ll miss some (and I’ve no idea the exact numbers of some) but here goes.
There’s:
A guinea pig
A toucan
A dove
2 geese
2 goats
3 dogs
3 roosters
4 cats
9 horses
Some number of rabbits
Some number of chickens
And some fish

First impression of the animals is most of them seem healthy, and nice enough, especially the horses.  The geese scare me a little, and the roosters… oh lordy.  Their internal alarm is set much earlier than the one’s on the farm.  It is not even 6:30, and they have been crowing for about an hour and a half, and quite loudly.  Not really ever going to have an issue with over sleeping here….
The toucan is pretty raucous in the morning as well as the geese… and then there are one or two wild birds that set up right outside my room that make a prodigious amount of noise.  Basically, dawn around here is heralded with about as much noise as an orchestra tuning for a performance. Lol (though somehow the people who live here sleep through it.  Amazing…)

The place and the schedule etc is a lot more laid back than at VerdEnergia.  Meals don’t run on a schedule, and are more often than not a sort of “make yourself at home and take what you want” kind of thing. Chores, though I haven’t gotten to do any yet, also seem to happen in a more organic and less scheduled fashion.

In a lot of ways, this place more resembles an American home.  There is a TV, and they have a ton of movies (and a portable player I can take to my room, which is fun).  The gas stove actually lights itself, rather than needing a hand held lighter to get it going.  There are things like poptarts and oreos in evidence.  Some things are the tico standard.  Cold showers.  One of the toilets doesn’t flush on it’s own, you have to dump a big bowl of water into it to make it go, and you certainly never flush toilet paper.

The cast of characters here is much smaller (especially since there are no clients right now, and won’t be for about a week).

Brenda: She was my contact for this whole adventure originally, and was also the one who put me in touch with VerdEnergia.  She is the mother figure, and the one in charge of me and the clients etc. She seems very laid back, has a good sense of humor, and obviously simply adores animals.  Most of the ones here are ones she has rescued. J On an amusing note, Brenda has been here 8 years, and still doesn’t speak Spanish.  Cracks me up.

Abel (I may be spelling this wrong): He is Brenda’s boyfriend of the last 8 years.  He is one of the few black ticos I’ve seen since being in this country.  Actually, he’s one of the only black people I’ve seen period.  There just aren’t many about.  His English is only so-so, so we haven’t done a ton of talking, but he is very nice, cooks very well, and I’m hoping he will help me improve my Spanish. J

Cameron: Cameron is Brenda’s 14-year-old daughter.  She’s home-schooled (And always has been) so she’s always about.  Bi-lingual (unlike her mom), and very nice and helpful, helping me translate with other members of the house (who I’ll mention next) and very into dancing. J

Santi (or Santiago): He is Abel’s 8-year-old grandson.  He basically only speaks Spanish, so we haven’t done too much communicating.  But he is obviously a veritable ball of energy, and certainly livens the place up.  Cameron is kind enough to translate between the two of us now and then.

Gracia: She is Abel’s daughter.  Don’t currently know how old she is, but she and Santi (who is her son) both live here.  She is a nurse.  Unfortunately, she was out of the house the whole day yesterday, so I don’t know much else about her or her personality as of yet.

Everyone has been very solicitous of me in my painful condition, and are encouraging me to take it easy until I’m feeling better.  It will be a very different life than on the farm at VerdEnergia, but I’m looking forward to learning the ins and outs of it, and getting settled in.

Pictures of the grounds, the animals (hopefully with names attached to most of them), and possibly the people to come soon.  I should note, not often is there internet available here, so emails and blog posts may be less frequent.

Excitement

Or, Buses and Butts

Well, I had an interesting couple of days there.  Packing up and leaving Dominical went off without a hitch.  Everything fit in my luggage, despite the addition of a towel and a hammock, and the bus came on time, and away we went.  Got to Quepos, confirmed my anticipated 3 hour wait for the next bus, and settled myself in a close by restaurant to each brunch and read.
Round about 25 minutes before my bus should have left Quepos, I wondered back to the station to wait.
And wait.
And wait…
Late buses make me a little panicky.  I always assume I’ve missed it, or got the time wrong, or something.  So, when the damn bus hadn’t even shown up 15 minutes after it was supposed to leave… I’m an unhappy gal.  Went up to the gal at the ticket window (who only spoke Spanish) and managed to gather from her that the bus would be 10-15 more minutes, and that something had been “muy malo (sp?)” or “very bad”.  I thought maybe the bus had stalled or something I wasn’t sure, I was just glad to hear it was coming.  Finally showed up probably 35 minutes after 1pm (when it was supposed to leave) and took off 45ish minutes late.
Whee!
Now, for the fun part…
About an hour into the trip from Quepos to Puriscal I come to the conclusion that what had been “muy malo” was the road.  I figured this out about the time the bus got stuck in the mud going up a hill.  You see, there had been rain recently, and there had been roadwork in that area, so the roads were more dirt than gravel, and that didn’t go well.  Now, these roads are sketchy under the best of circumstances, and every time to get on one I kind of resign myself to the possibility that we’ll end up going off a cliff, but this time, it seemed really quite likely, as the getting stuck was preceded by much slipping and sliding around.
I was right.
We got towed up the hill by a big tractor like thing the road crew was using.  This went alright. Ish. Until we came to a turn in the road.  Which was banked.  The we just slid right off the road.  And would have just slid right off the cliff, if there hadn’t been a couple of handy trees.
Fun times.
But!  Those trees were there, and eventually, after much consultation and discussion, he road crew and our driver figured out a way to tow us back onto the road and up the hill. (watching these discussions was fun since I couldn’t understand them.  Fun to caption them in my head.  “So, what we need to do here is get the bus back up on the road” “No, really, I couldn’t have guessed…” Lol)
There was some more slippage after that, but we remained on the road, and I lived to write another blog post!  Of course, I got to Puriscal 1.5 hours late and missed my ride.  Could have bused to the farm, but fuck it, I got a taxi.  I was done with buses for the day!

And then there was today (the 15th).
Another “fun” day.
About 5 days ago I noticed something that I took at first to be a pimple.  Then it got bigger, and I thought it was a bid pimple, like, the biggest I’d ever had.  But, back at the farm, I’d heard too many horror stories about Torselos (fly maggots) and one of the girls actually had one on the back of her thigh… So I did not try to pop this pimple, incase it was a Torselo, because if you kill one, you get a horrible infection.  So I left it be, and hoped it would just go away.
No such luck.
In fact, it got worse.
Enough worse that I began to think it really well might have been a Torselo.  I was in much trepidation.  But then the swelling kept getting worse, and bigger, and redder, and it got very warm, which seemed to me like it could be the harbinger of an infection… But there was no handle clinic in Dominical, and  figured, if it didn’t go away or got much worse, I’d just go to the same Dr. in Puriscal that I saw for my Kidney infection.
Well, I bet you can guess where I was today.
At the doctor.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the best part of this mystery affliction.  It is on my right ass cheek.  Like, nearly in the crack of my ass.  So you can bet that made the bus rides fun, and the doctor’s visit ignominious.
Turns out it was an abscess.  Don’t ask, I don’t know how or why it happened.  And, if you are at all squeamish, I’d say stop reading here, and just now I’ll be fine.  The next bit is gross.

So yeah, had to get it lanced.  Did opt for the local anesthesia, which I was glad for, but the multitude of shots in my butt cheek hurt like the dickens in and of themselves.  Then, out came the scalpel! I’m kind of glad I couldn’t watch this process.  The doctor must have spent 30 minutes cutting me and squeezing prodigious amounts of blood and puss out of me.  Apparently there were like 2 capsules of pus, one deeper than the other? (her English wasn’t perfect, but that was my understanding).  I, of course, I was laying on my stomach, and there was enough blood she wasn’t able to catch and sop up that I was bloody all down my thighs etc.  And I guess the puss was... thick.  So very, very, very gross.  Eventually she thought she’d gotten all she could out, put an antibiotic cream on me, bandaged me up, and sent me off to pick up a prescription for antibiotic pills as well.  I really hope she got all or close to all the pus, because if she didn’t, the antibiotics could make the abscess, well, her word was “explode” but I’m figuring she meant, like, rupture, or maybe erupt?  Anyway you word it, I do not want it to happen. It already feels a little better, though still pretty swollen, and still hot to the touch.  Still awfully tender too, so sitting is still interesting.

So yeah, those were my exciting couple of days.  Safe and sound at the new place, and I will write more about that later.  For now, time to take my wounded ass to bed.

Moving on

Leaving for the horse ranch in 1.5 hours. 8.5 total hours of travel time should see me in Puriscacl, waiting to get picked up. :-)
The beach was amazing, and like the ranch, I'll be sorry to leave.  But I've made some really incredible memories, and met some wonderful people.

Now.

The adventure continues!

Last pictures from the beach

Everything I need. :-) (Including cocolate frio con Malibu. Lol)

Happy Hammock

Pelican!

More happy hammock, just another angle.

Sunbathing while it was still tolerably cool.

I can not get enough of this hammock...

My day.

In summation:
Swam naked pre-dawn.
Napped.
Lazed around in my hammock with this awesome coconut with a straw (which I then hacked in half and ate the flesh of)
Then a great guy I met at the hostel informed me that he'd found a local guy willing to take him out fishing for the price of gas, and did I want to come.  So I went, though I thought I'd just be hanging out. You know, no fishing pole.  But the capitan of out tiny vessel loaned me one, aaaaaaaaaaand.....
Yep, that's right, I caught that.  Boom!
Pretty excited.
So, first half of my day went as expected, second half totally not, but in an awesome way.  Now one of the fish we caught is on the BBQ...
Good last day at the beach I think.
Oh, flirting with and getting a necklace from the cute guy on the boat didn't hurt either. ;-)

Some more Teddy

Wherever you go, there you are.

First of course, obligatory self-portrait of the day.

Interesting for me to notice the things about myself that are perfectly consistent, no matter what environs I find myself in.

I am a people person.  I strike up conversations with random folk, make friends quickly and without conscious effort.  Every day I've been at the beach, I've made some new friend of acquaintance, maybe had a drink of meal with them, talked...  It's just me. :-)

I am a creature of habit.  While I've explored a the town, and am branching out a little for meals, mostly I'm eating at the same table in my cafe at the hostel and getting the same meals.  I like routine, and I like being known by the staff where I go.

Even here, miles and miles and miles from home or a schedule I need to keep, or anyone caring where I go or what I do... I plan.  and I feel the need to have *more* plans, and feel a little guilty when I have limited plans for the day.  This one is a little funny, but also a little disconcerting.  It is OK goddamnit if all I do in my day is read, swim, and nap!  I don't have an obligation to do *more*, to go on tours, or hikes, or explore the next town over.  Relaxation is perfectly acceptable. Of course, to convince myself of this I need to plan on relaxing... Lol

With no constraints on my time, and no one needing me... I'm still an early to bed and early to rise gal.  Waking up naturally between 5:30 and 6:00 each morning.

I sing wherever I go, and become known for it.

I am wordy.

I am sensual.

I laugh a lot and loudly.

So here I am.  Being me, and enjoying it. :-)

Exploring

Well, I was going to post a video on here, but it is being a bitch and won't upload.  So, the video is going to be one facebook, which actually seems to be uploading it, and I'll just post some pictures on here.  Went exploring on the beach this morning.  Walked south until I couldn't anymore, because of a rocky promontory I couldn't get around safely.  Did some fun running and splashing in the ocean in my dress (that's the video) and some fun shell hunting.  Found some gorgeous ones!  I think I'm going to make some of the rocks and shells I've found on this trip into jewelry when I get back home... Anyway, pictures are from the walk, and me after the swimming in my dress. :-)
